Home Ownership Melissa Infanzon September 23, 2026
Fall on Long Island is one of the best times of year to be a homeowner. The air cools down, the leaves start changing, and opening the windows feels better than running the air conditioning.
It is also a good time to give your home some attention before winter. This does not mean taking on expensive projects or spending every weekend doing chores. Most of these tasks are quick and inexpensive, and they help keep your home comfortable and running smoothly.
Think of it as a seasonal reset for your house.
Turn on the heat before the first cold night and make sure it starts normally. Replace the filter if your system uses one, and check that furniture is not blocking vents or radiators.
If your system is due for routine service, schedule it before the first cold stretch when appointment times fill quickly.
If you have an irrigation system, add the sprinkler blowout to your calendar. Removing water from the lines helps protect them when temperatures fall below freezing.
This appointment is easy to forget until the first frost appears in the forecast.
You do not need to clear every falling leaf. Wait until the trees around your home are mostly bare, then remove leaves and debris from the gutters and make sure the downspouts direct water away from the house.
Good drainage matters on Long Island, where heavy rain, sloped yards, and high water tables can cause water to collect where it should not.
This task is free and takes about two minutes. Disconnect exterior hoses, drain them, and shut off the water supply to outdoor faucets if your home has an interior shutoff.
Empty and store watering cans, nozzles, and other items that could hold water and crack when it freezes.
You do not need to conduct your own home inspection. Walk around the property and look for anything that has changed.
Check for loose shingles, peeling caulk, branches touching the roof, damaged screens, or water collecting near the foundation. Catching a small issue early can keep it small.
Press the test button on each detector and replace batteries where needed. If you do not know how old a detector is, check the date printed on the unit.
Make sure everyone in the house knows what the alarms sound like and where to meet outside in an emergency.
You do not need to schedule service because fall arrived. If drains have been unusually slow, you hear gurgling, notice odors, or know the system is overdue for maintenance, consider making a call before the ground freezes.
If everything is working normally and the system has been maintained on schedule, no action may be needed.
On a cool or windy day, check exterior doors and frequently used windows for drafts. A new door sweep or weatherstripping can make a room more comfortable without becoming a major project.
Check the door between the house and an attached garage too.
Gather flashlights, batteries, ice melt, a snow shovel, and an outdoor extension cord before you need them. If you own a generator, make sure it starts. Move anything you may need during a storm to an easy to reach spot.
If you already have these supplies, organizing them costs nothing and saves you from searching the garage during the first messy forecast.
Preparing your home for fall does not need to feel overwhelming. Start with the free five minute tasks, schedule the one or two appointments your house needs, and save the rest for another weekend.
Homes do not need to be perfect. A few small steps now can make the colder months easier and more comfortable.
