A Love Letter to Kings Park

Kings Park has one of the most unique origin stories on Long Island.

What is now a beloved North Shore community was largely farmland until the late 1800s, when New York selected the area as the site of what became the Kings Park Psychiatric Center. The facility was built in response to overcrowding in Brooklyn institutions, with the belief that fresh air, open land, and a connection to nature could play an important role in healing.

In many ways, the town grew alongside the hospital. Employees needed housing, businesses followed, and a community began to take shape around the sprawling campus overlooking the Nissequogue River.

Today, that history is still part of Kings Park's identity, but it no longer defines it.

Instead, Kings Park is known for sunrise walks along the bluff at Sunken Meadow, fishing trips on the Nissequogue, and summer nights that always seem to end with ice cream at Ralph's or a stop somewhere along Main Street.

It's families spending entire afternoons at Sunken Meadow Beach without ever feeling the need to leave town. It's boaters heading out from the river, neighbors gathering for Kings Park Day, and the kind of community where running a quick errand often turns into a twenty-minute conversation with someone you know at Linda's Riverside Pizza.

Ask a local what they love most and you'll hear many of the same answers: the small-town feel, the access to the water, the miles of trails and open space, and neighborhoods like San Remo that still carry the charm of old Long Island.

Maybe that's what makes Kings Park so special. The same things that brought people here nearly 140 years ago — room to breathe, proximity to nature, and a quieter pace of life — are still what keep people here today.
