🕰 Daylight Saving Hacks for Kids

Parenting Melissa Infanzon October 29, 2025

I am dreading this Sunday, 11/2/25.

Last Fall, daylight savings was brutal - Tanner (now 3.5 years old) had be down at his "construction site" at 430a every morning...for weeks (photo evidence attached). Brooks (2 years old) just got over a terrible sleep regression and is finally "sleeping in" until 7a! This year, I am determined to preserve as much sleep as possible. If you try the tips below - let me know how they work for you!! Good luck to all the parents out there!

Every parent knows the chaos that comes with daylight saving time — especially here in Northport, where those bright harbor sunsets can stretch well past bedtime. Twice a year, the clocks change, and suddenly your kids are wide awake at 9 p.m. or bouncing out of bed before sunrise.

But don’t worry — as both a real estate advisor and local mom, I’ve learned that just like prepping your home for a showing, a little planning goes a long way. Here are my favorite daylight saving hacks for kids that keep your home — and your family — in rhythm. 🌙🏡

🌤️ 1. Start the Shift Early

About 3–4 days before the clock changes, shift bedtime and wake-up time by 10–15 minutes each day.
By the weekend, their bodies will have naturally adjusted — no meltdowns required.

💡 Pro tip: Try a color-changing sleep clock that shows kids when it’s time to wake up (and when it’s still quiet time). Great for toddlers and early risers!

🌙 2. Keep Evenings Calm & Dim

After the clocks change, the Northport sunsets might still light up your child’s room.
Close those blinds early, switch to warm lighting, and skip screens before bed.
This helps their brains wind down and makes bedtime feel consistent — even when the sky disagrees.

🍎 3. Stick to Routine

Whether you’re prepping your home for sale or settling into a new one, routine matters.
Kids thrive on predictability — so keep your bath, story, and bedtime rituals in the same order, even if the clock looks different.

Consistency helps reset their internal clocks faster than any bedtime negotiation ever could. 😉

☀️ 4. Get That Morning Sun

One of the perks of life in Northport? Gorgeous natural light. ☀️
Take advantage of it — eat breakfast by the window or step outside for a quick morning walk.
Exposure to sunlight helps your child’s body clock recalibrate naturally (and it’s a great excuse for coffee on the porch).

😴 5. Be Patient (and Kind to Yourself)

Even with the best planning, your kids might be a little off for a few days.
That’s okay — keep the routine, stay calm, and remember: it’s temporary.
A well-rested home is a happy home, whether you’re living in it or listing it. 🏡

🎉 Bonus Hack: Make It Fun!

Turn daylight saving into a mini family event:

  • 🍕 Friday night “Time Change Pizza Party”
  • 🕰️ Let kids help “change” the clocks
  • 🧁 Celebrate Sunday with a “We Did It!” breakfast

Making it playful helps kids feel involved and eases the transition — just like turning home prep into an adventure before a big open house.

💬 Final Thoughts

As a Northport real estate advisor, I see firsthand how much families value homes that support good routines — cozy bedrooms, warm morning light, and peaceful evenings.
And when daylight saving throws your schedule off, these simple hacks help you keep that comfort and balance right where it belongs — at home.
